The Indiana Legends – An ABA Team Bringing Basketball to New Castle

The Indiana Legends, a recently established basketball team led by owner and coach Holli Poe, is anticipating an exciting second season. The team includes 10 to 12 players who have played at various levels of college and professional basketball, bringing a wealth of experience and talent to the court.

The Indiana Legends, based in New Castle, Indiana, is a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association (ABA), a semi-professional men’s basketball league. The ABA was co-founded by Dick Tinkham, a co-founder of the Indiana Pacers, and Joe Newman. Additionally, the Women’s American Basketball Association (WABA) was launched in 2017, providing opportunities for female players.

The ABA offers a fast-paced, exciting, affordable alternative to the NBA, featuring talented players nationwide who showcase their skills and passion for the game. These players captivate fans with their athleticism, teamwork, and commitment to delivering an unforgettable basketball experience.

The Legends’ regular season commences in mid-October and concludes at the end of February. Practices and games occur at the Church Street Gym in New Castle. Home games offer concessions and Legends merchandise, and occasionally, a meet-and-greet with the Legends players takes place post-game.

Furthermore, the Indiana Lady Jr. Legends, an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Girl’s Basketball 17U Basketball traveling team, is affiliated with the Indiana Legends organization.

Beyond games and practices, the Legends engage in charitable causes and community events off the court. As a New Castle-Henry County Chamber of Commerce member, the Legends actively participate in community events like the New Castle Broad Street Cruise-In and the annual Dribble Over Drugs 3-on-3 Fundraiser.

A Community-Supported Season of Excitement

Coach Poe receives support from Coach Silvers, Coach Cross, and Coach Spears this year. Poe manages the team’s daily operations, observing their on-court performance during games and witnessing their excitement after a challenging shot or a slam dunk.

Coach Poe highlighted the team’s performance: “Overall, we are going to be a tough team to beat. We have strength in our chemistry, and the flow on the court between our points and our paints.”

Fans can attend games at the Church Street Gym in New Castle and support the team at away games, providing invaluable support. Coach Poe expressed gratitude for the fan support: “Our fan base has been by our side since day one and has continued to grow in our second year. We couldn’t ask for a better group of fans to follow us, game to game. Their support is what keeps us going.”
